Hypnosis is a state of hyper-suggestibility for transformative change. It is experiencing a relaxed and focused state that allows effortless transformation from undesired behaviors to desired ones. This state is reached in the Alpha state (relaxed alertness and light hypnosis). In other words, hypnosis is a state of mind that helps us to surpass our conscious mind and allows us to access the subconscious mind, where we store all our memories, beliefs, and habits.
Hypnosis is NOT - sleep, unconsciousness, being gullible, weak-minded, controlled by someone else, or losing self-control.
You never lose your complete sense of awareness or fall asleep in hypnosis. On the contrary, you are more fully awake and relaxed. You’ll remain conscious of your surroundings and may experience sensations like tingling, lightness, fluttering eyelids of emotions or energy movement. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
Hypnosis and meditation induce similar states of relaxation that can help you get through your day stress-free. Hypnosis tends to have a specific goal—such as overcoming fear or eliminating unhealthy habits —whereas meditation is usually practiced with no purpose and involves emptying the mind. Hypnosis is a generally cooperative activity between the hypnotherapist and the subject, whereas meditation is traditionally performed alone.
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we all experience daily. Everyone can be hypnotized because it’s a natural, normal state that we enter at least twice daily – upon waking and falling asleep. It’s like being engrossed in a movie or book, influencing emotions, confidence, and behaviors. Everyone can be hypnotized as long as they’re willing.
If you have ever told yourself that you wouldn’t be able to do something and when the time came to do it, you weren’t able to do it, you have been in a hypnotic state.
Or if you have ever told yourself I can do it and when the time came, you automatically felt this surge of confidence, you have experienced a hypnotic state.
Before you begin, I will explain the hypnosis process and review your desired goals. Then, I will start by talking in a gentle, soothing tone, describing images that create a sense of relaxation, security, and well-being.
When you're relaxed and calm, I suggest ways to achieve your goals. That may include, for example, ways to increase motivation or reduce cravings to eat junk food or smoke. I will also help you visualize vivid, meaningful mental images of yourself accomplishing your goals.
When the session is over, you may be able to bring yourself out of hypnosis on your own. Or I may need to help you gradually and comfortably increase your alertness.
Hypnosis works by helping us bypass the critical filter of the conscious mind, thereby providing access to the subconscious mind. Using the subconscious mind's resourcefulness empowers individuals to overcome challenges and achieve desired outcomes.
A decrease in activity in the part of the brain involved in cognition and movement (dorsal anterior cingulate) - so you may feel more relaxed and not worry about outside concerns while hypnotized.
An increase in activity in the region of the brain that is responsible for the brain-body connection. This is particularly useful when hypnosis is applied to manage health conditions, such as controlling the brain-gut connection for people with IBS.
More significant activity in two brain parts is involved in processing your actions. This may be how suggestions to change your behavior, such as avoiding sugary foods or not smoking, are more readily accepted.
Coaches can use Hypnosis to help clients overcome hindrances that are stopping them from achieving their goals, and therapists can combine Hypnosis with different modalities such as mindfulness, affirmations, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming to help clients overcome limited self-beliefs and achieve desirable outcomes.
How does Hypnosis differ from Life Coaching?
In Hypnosis, the individual is in a heightened state of suggestibility. It is an awake state of relaxation - the Alpha state in which rapport is developed with the subconscious mind by bypassing the conscious mind's critical factor. Hypnosis is an effective technique that empowers individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their desired outcomes.
In Life Coaching, utilizing the CORE Method is a partnering process where the coach helps clients define and achieve their goals, eliminate limiting negative emotions, and motivate and teach them to motivate themselves and hold themselves accountable. This partnership requires that the coach and client be fully committed and vested in the process to reach the desired outcome.
The discussions occur entirely in everyday, waking consciousness awareness (Beta brainwave).
